What You’re Struggling With - And How I Can Help

If you’ve landed here, chances are you’re thinking of investing in your child’s education because something is missing. Or you’re already investing in it and something is still missing.

Let’s talk about what I hear from parents again and again:

🧩 "My child is struggling, but they can’t explain why - and I don’t know how to help."

Math and science build like a house. Miss one piece of the foundation, and what’s supposed to be resting on top of it can begin to wobble. I specialize in pinpointing exactly where your child got off track - and gently but clearly fill in those gaps.

🗺️ "We’ve tried a tutor but they weren’t aligned with what my son/daughter is learning in school."

I work directly with your child’s current school materials and curriculum. That means we build confidence using what they’re already facing in class, while reinforcing the fundamentals beneath it. If we need to venture outside of that for something, we can do that too.

📉 "We tried a tutor, but the results weren’t consistent."

You won’t be left wondering whether this is working. I track progress and communicate regularly - so you’ll see real, steady growth in both skills and confidence.

🤷 "I’m concerned my child won’t click with a tutor."

I don’t just teach. I mentor and connect. With 10 years of tutoring experience, I’ve worked with many types of learners - from the unmotivated to the advanced - and I adapt my approach to meet your child where they are. If your child and I aren’t connecting, I’ll let you know immediately and work to find someone who will be a better fit.

💸 "Tutoring is expensive - how do I know it’s worth it?"

Investments generally are. I get it. But you want more than someone who just helps with homework. You want someone who helps your child think independently, believe in themselves, and feel like they can handle whatever comes next. That’s what I do.

Is your child struggling, but can’t quite explain why?

You know your student is smart. But:

  • They’re confused in class or falling behind

  • Their confidence is dropping. Maybe quickly.

  • You're trying to help, but you’re not even sure where to begin

You're not alone - and it’s not your fault. Schools have classrooms of 20-30 students they need to push through the curricula, and therefore rarely teach to the individual. For a student who’s not quite getting what they need in a way they can understand it, the class can move too quickly.

Here’s what I do differently and why it works.

🧠 I identify what your student doesn’t know that they don’t know.
Students rarely say, “I don’t understand how to derive the quadratic equation from standard form” or “I forgot what I learned in 8th grade about how to convert radicals to integers with exponents.” I’ve taught thousands of hours of math and science and can quickly spot foundational gaps that block progress. Then we fix them, fast.

📚 I don’t teach at students. I coach and mentor to them.
Whether your student is overwhelmed or advanced, I tailor how I teach so they stay engaged and in control of their learning. I help them make sense of the material and connect it to their real life - not just next week’s test.

🔍 I work in sync with your student’s school curriculum - and beyond it.
I align with Forsyth and Gwinnett County high school curricula (South, West, East, and North Forsyth, North Gwinnett, Pinecrest Academy, King’s Ridge, Fellowship Christian School, Saint Francis School, etc.) while strengthening the long-term skills they’ll need for college, career, and life.

🚀 And yes, I used to work at NASA.
That childhood dream came true. What drives me now is helping students see their own potential so they don’t potentially waste years in a system that doesn't.

This Isn’t Just Tutoring - It’s Transformation

Here’s what your student will gain:

✅ Clarity on confusing topics

✅ Confidence in math and science

✅ Better grades - and better thinking

✅ Mentorship from someone who’s been through the system, broken out of it, and worked with world-class scientists and astronauts

What Parents are Saying

“As the parents of two very different types of students, we found exactly what we needed in Michael’s tutoring services!  Our son was mathematically inclined but was placed with an AP Calculus teacher who did not seem to be as invested in his success as he needed.  Michael stepped in and taught him the entire curriculum which resulted in an A for the course.  They also engaged in some lively science conversations and shared some great life-advice.  Our daughter was not as naturally inclined toward math or science and needed support for her coursework and standardized testing preparation.  Michael’s ability to reframe concepts and present the topics in ways that she could understand them facilitated her academic accomplishments.  Simply cannot endorse Michael with enough enthusiasm and gratitude – he was a game-changer for both our kids!”

— Elizabeth Cooke

“Michael saved us in high school! Our son Max fell so far behind before midterms he was at risk of failing the class. We were given a chance to have him retake all the exams and we sought out help from Michael to essentially ‘re-teach’ much of the semester. Max was missing key fundamentals, which took patience and a custom approach to our son’s way of learning. Through Michael we learned that Max had a great aptitude for math, he just needed the steps laid out differently to ‘get it.’ Max said Michael’s patience, his calm demeanor and his ability to step him through in ways he understood, based on how his brain processes, was extremely important. Max considered him a friend too. Michael relates well to any personality type. Thanks to Michael, Max passed with flying colors!”

— The Bumbas

“We found Michael at a time when our son was really struggling with math and not real excited about science. Michael has really helped him to bring up his grades in both areas. He has also done a great job in preparing him for the ACT and SAT tests. Michael is professional, patient, and easy going. He is able to communicate math concepts in such a way that they make more sense and are easier to understand. Not sure where we would be without his assistance over the last two years!”

— Bette Glass

“Michael started tutoring my son in middle school and continued throughout high school. He helped him raise his grades and helped him maintain a high GPA. Michael is a great communicator with the student and parent. He is extremely knowledgeable, supportive and professional. I would highly recommend his services to anyone.”

— Shari Weiss

“Mike was an amazing and patient tutor for my daughter and son. He put in a genuine effort to connect with my son and understand his passions. I cannot recommend him highly enough!”

— Jan Dewey

“Michael is a great tutor for all types of students. He helped my son go from a C to an A in both Geometry and Algebra. He also helped my older son who had a 4.10 GPA, when he struggled with some concepts in Calculus. My sons loved working with Michael. He relates well with all types of students!”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I specialize in high school and lower-level college math and science. Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics. I also tutor SAT and ACT test prep (math and science sections, and test-taking strategies).

  • The vast majority of the students I work with are high school age, but I work with advanced 8th grade all the way to adults. I’ve worked with students in 8th grade all the way to up to adults going back to school to finish their degree or obtain another one.

In terms of subject matter, this generally looks like upper-level high school and lower-level college math and science.

If you’re looking for tutoring for early middle school or elementary school, I’d recommend working with someone who specializes in those levels and age groups.

  • I work with students in Forsyth County (South, North, West, East), North Gwinnett, and surrounding areas. If located further away, talk to me here.

  • I can absolutely tutor online, and if that’s something you want, let’s go for it. That being said, I’ve found in-person tutoring to be more effective at not only improving grades, but also connecting with students.

  • Not at all! Many of my students are high achievers looking to stay ahead or deepen their understanding.

  • Sessions are an hour long. I’ve found that a duration of one hour works well with most students’ attention span and ability to retain information. That being said, how long and how often we meet is determined by your goals, where your student is currently at compared to those goals, how quickly they progress, etc.

Typically I meet students once per week, but it’s also not uncommon to schedule two or three sessions per week, or have the sessions be longer, depending on the needs.

  • On weekdays students typically meet with me between the hours of 3:00pm and 8:00pm, as that’s when school is out. If your student would like to meet earlier I’d be glad to work within your schedule.

On weekends I ‘m available beginning in the morning.

If you’d like to schedule a session and haven’t had an introductory phone call, schedule that first here. I’ll get an idea of your student, your and their goals and what you’d like to accomplish.

  • Absolutely! ACT, SAT and AP exams (Calculus, Physics). Inquire here if you’re looking for help with the GRE, ASVAB or similar.

  • Generally, yes. I’ve worked with many students who have ADHD and dyslexia. Keep in mind I’m not specially certified in those learning differences; if your child’s case is more severe, it may be worth finding a tutor with specializations in those differences.

  • There is no minimum commitment. Due to the value your student will be receiving and the individualized one-on-one nature of the sessions, expect to see premium rates. Single sessions outside of packages cost more. Discounted packaged plans are available for students intending to meet longer-term (strongly recommended). See pricing information here.

  • Absolutely, 100% yes. College and career planning are crucial, and I’m glad to mentor students in these capacities.

  • This is common. Many students don’t like math for one reason or another, and not everyone is wired in a way that makes math more naturally understandable. If this is the case with your student, we’ll sit down, pinpoint the reason, and work through it in the tutoring. Everyone is different, but in my experience, the transformation from “hating” math to liking math (or at least not hating it anymore) is one that simply requires teaching the subject in a way that’s aligned with how the student’s mind processes information.

  • This is very much dependent upon the student. With some students a lightbulb goes off during the first session; with others it may take a few weeks or a month. Rest assured, I do everything I can to get kids out of ruts and move them ahead. If I see something preventing that from happening, I’ll let you know ASAP.

  • Yes! See pricing information here.

  • Absolutely. This typically happens with a short conversation after each session or later that day. I’ll keep you in the loop with regular updates.
